Egypt Advances Initiatives for Sustainable Water Management: Irrigation Minister

Cairo: Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, has announced that Egypt is collaborating with international partners to develop initiatives focused on the sustainable management of green water. These efforts include the use of artificial intelligence in hydrological forecasting and the integration of water issues into the frameworks of the three Rio Conventions.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation on non-conventional water resources and transboundary water management. He noted that these initiatives, along with others being developed through the conference's interactive dialogues, offer an opportunity to lay the groundwork for the 2026 UN Water Conference and enhance international cooperation in the water sector.

Sewilam's remarks were made during his address at the ministerial preparatory meeting for the 2026 UN Water Conference, organized by the UAE and Senegal. This meeting was part of his participation in the ministerial segment of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the UN headquarters in New York, and was attended by Egypt's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ehab Awad.

As co-chair of the third interactive dialogue "Water for the Planet," alongside Japan, Sewilam reviewed the progress in preparations for the dialogue and the conference, emphasizing efforts to produce practical outcomes that bolster international action in the water sector. He praised the strong coordination among host countries, co-chairs of the dialogues, the conference secretariat, and all stakeholders, noting that this cooperation has fostered an inclusive and implementation-oriented preparatory process.

Sewilam also welcomed the launch of the initiative submission track, describing it as a crucial step to transform dialogue into concrete actions that will ensure a lasting sustainable legacy for the conference.
