Egypt Advances El-Dabaa Nuclear Plant with First Steam Generator Installation

Cairo:The installation of the first steam generator at the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt has commenced. This marks a significant step in the construction of the country's first nuclear power facility, coinciding with the 53rd anniversary celebrations of the October War victory.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) stated that the steam generator is a critical component of the VVER-1200 nuclear reactor system. It functions as a thermal link between the primary and secondary circuits, transferring heat to produce steam that drives the turbines for electricity generation.

Each steam generator in the plant is capable of transferring approximately 800 megawatts thermal (MWt), producing about 1,600 tons of steam per hour. A nuclear unit at El-Dabaa comprises four steam generators, providing a total heat transfer capacity of around 3,200 MWt and a steam production rate of approximately 6,400 tons per hour.

The NPPA highlighted that the VVER-1200 steam generators are notable for their substantial size and high thermal capacity, each measuring about 14 meters in length, weighing nearly 350 tons, and containing around 11,000 heat-exchange tubes.

The installation milestone is particularly meaningful as it aligns with the anniversary of the October 6 victory, symbolizing a blend of national pride and technological advancement. This development is part of Egypt's broader strategy to enhance its nuclear energy capabilities and ensure a secure and sustainable electricity supply.

The El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant will comprise four VVER-1200 units, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, resulting in a total installed capacity of approximately 4,800 megawatts. The project is being carried out in cooperation with Atomstroyexport (ASE) as the general contractor, adhering to stringent nuclear safety and quality standards.
