Cabinet Approves Circular Enforcing Energy-Efficiency Standards

New capital: The Cabinet approved a circular mandating all ministries, governorates, and state-owned bodies to adhere to a set of updated energy efficiency standards. The circular was approved during a Cabinet meeting under Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli in the New Capital on Thursday 26/3/2026.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS), in coordination with the electricity ministry, will update specifications for air conditioners, motors, and lighting equipment. These items will undergo pre-shipment inspection in collaboration with the General Organization for Export and Import Control. The circular further stipulates that no shipments of the regulated appliances will be cleared without a certificate of conformity from an accredited body.

Additionally, the new directives require that mandatory energy efficiency labels be attached before local market entry. Production lines and retail outlets are to be subjected to regular inspections to ensure compliance. The unauthorized sale of products failing to meet the required specifications will lead to immediate legal action under consumer protection laws.

Furthermore, all government technical specifications and tenders are now obliged to explicitly require compliance with the updated EOS standards. This move aims to bolster energy efficiency across various sectors by ensuring that only compliant products reach the market.
