Brussels: Belgian authorities announced they had returned a 2,000-year-old sarcophagus to Egypt, marking the end of a decade-long investigation after the artefact was seized by police in Brussels.
According to Nam News Network, the sarcophagus, along with a piece of an ancient wooden beard, was formally handed over to the Egyptian ambassador during a ceremony in the Belgian capital. This gesture signifies the culmination of legal proceedings aimed at returning the artefact to its rightful home.
Julien Moinil, the Brussels public prosecutor, emphasized the importance of the return, stating that it is a significant act of justice to restore an item misappropriated from Egypt's heritage. The sarcophagus's materials and craftsmanship highlight the exceptional skill of ancient artisans, reflecting the cultural significance of the artefact.
The handover is seen as a step towards rectifying historical wrongs, ensuring that cultural treasures are preserved and respected in their countries of origin.
