Azhar Grand Imam Advocates for Global Consensus on Human Rights Respecting Cultural and Religious Diversity

Al-azhar: Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb has called for an international agreement on human rights that honors the cultural and religious uniqueness of different societies. He cautioned against using human rights as a justification to impose external values or intervene in the internal matters of other countries.

According to State Information Service Egypt, during a meeting with French Ambassador for Human Rights Isabelle Rome, El-Tayeb emphasized the divergent perspectives on human rights between Eastern and Western societies. He asserted that universally accepted principles should be grounded in shared values rather than imposed standards.

El-Tayeb also highlighted that religion is often misappropriated to justify conflicts and rights violations, using the situation in Gaza as an example. He urged the global community to focus on resolving conflicts and ensuring civilian protection.

In response, Rome commended Al-Azhar's efforts in fostering interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. She underscored the necessity of respecting cultural and religious diversity while upholding fundamental human rights for all.
