83 Egyptian Educational Institutions Listed in Global Webometrics Ranking for 2026

Cairo: Egypt recorded a continued rise in the number of its universities listed in the January 2026 edition of the global Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, with 83 Egyptian higher education institutions included.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the figure marks a steady increase from 76 institutions in 2022, 78 in 2023, 79 in 2024, and 81 in the July 2024 edition. Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour praised the significant advances made by Egyptian universities in international rankings, stating that their appearance in the January edition of Webometrics reflects ongoing success and a strong global presence in line with the national higher education and scientific research strategy.

Ashour stated that the results show Egyptian universities can compete globally, emphasizing ongoing government support for scientific research, international publishing, and digital infrastructure development in partnership with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, aiming to strengthen Egypt's role as a regional and global education hub.

Ashour added that Webometrics assesses universities and academic institutions based on their digital presence, research impact, academic excellence, and openness, noting that development efforts now focus on keeping pace with global digital transformation trends.

Ten Egyptian universities were ranked among the world's top 1,000 institutions, led by Cairo University at 405th globally, followed by Alexandria University (517), Ain Shams University (658), Mansoura University (662), Future University in Egypt (667), the American University in Cairo (849), Zagazig University (867), Al-Azhar University (879), Assiut University (899), and Benha University (917).

Several other Egyptian universities were ranked between 1,000 and 2,000 globally, including Tanta University, Helwan University (Capital Campus), Menoufia University, Kafr El-Sheikh University, Minya University, Suez Canal University, and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, among others.

Additional Egyptian institutions were listed among the world's top 5,000 universities, bringing the total number of Egyptian institutions included in the ranking to 83 out of about 32,000 universities and institutes worldwide.
