Alexandria: Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir took part on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in a ceremony in Alexandria marking World Maritime Day 2026, held under the theme 'From Policy to Practice: Empowering Maritime Excellence.' The event was organized by the Maritime Transport Sector in conjunction with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) observance of the occasion.
According to State Information Service Egypt, in his opening remarks, the minister emphasized that this year's theme reflected the international maritime community's focus on translating policies into tangible improvements in maritime efficiency and sustainability. He highlighted Egypt's geographic position as a key hub for global trade and the government's commitment to developing the maritime sector as a cornerstone of economic growth.
El-Wazir outlined a comprehensive program aimed at developing ports, infrastructure, and logistics services in line with international standards. This program includes eight integrated international development and logistics corridors linking Red Sea and Mediterranean ports and the Suez Canal with dry ports and industrial, agricultural, and mining zones through advanced transportation networks.
The minister detailed the corridors intended to enhance the efficiency of Egypt's economy and its connectivity with regions such as the Gulf states, the Levant, Africa, and Europe. These corridors include Arish-Taba, Sokhna-Alexandria, Safaga-Qena-Abu Tartour, Cairo-Alexandria, among others.
As part of the maritime development plan, El-Wazir mentioned the goal to transform ports into integrated logistics hubs and the expansion of port facilities. The plan includes the development of navigation channels, maritime tug fleets, and the construction of new ports to increase the total number of commercial ports.
El-Wazir reported that Egyptian ports experienced strong growth in 2025, with significant increases in cargo and container throughput. He noted new investments in terminal infrastructure and operations, which have positioned Egypt 19th globally in the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI).
Efforts to restore Egypt's merchant fleet are underway, with a plan to expand the fleet to 40 commercial vessels by 2030. The minister also reaffirmed Egypt's adherence to international maritime conventions and its cooperation with the IMO.
On environmental initiatives, El-Wazir highlighted Egypt's strategy for green transitions in maritime operations, aligning with the IMO's goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He emphasized Egypt's role as a regional leader, hosting the IMO Regional Office for Arab States.
The event, featuring a video address by the IMO Secretary-General, was attended by key officials and maritime sector leaders, underscoring Egypt's strategic developments and commitment to maritime excellence.
