Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met on Thursday, September 10, 2026, with Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to review current and future projects and plans in the renewable energy sector. Madbouly emphasized that the meeting is part of the government's ongoing efforts to monitor clean energy projects in alignment with the national energy strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 45% of the energy mix by 2028.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister Esmat detailed the ministry's intensive initiatives to meet these targets by advancing electricity generation projects based on renewable sources, expanding energy storage projects utilizing battery technologies, and reinforcing the necessary infrastructure. He also emphasized the importance of international cooperation and partnerships in advancing the renewable energy sector.
Esmat highlighted that the proportion of clean energy in the energy mix is rising, with solar power being the predominant component of the renewable energy system, while wind power significantly contributes to the national grid. Hydropower remains a crucial and stable element of the energy mix, ensuring consistent energy supply.
The minister reported that the current storage capacity from energy storage technologies is approximately 1,100 megawatt-hours (MWh). During the meeting, Esmat discussed various renewable power generation and energy storage battery projects that have been completed, are under implementation, or are planned to commence soon, aiming to bolster the national electricity grid and enhance its capacity.
Esmat also outlined the achievements and technical advancements added to the electricity grid as part of the development plan for the current summer of 2026. This plan, which sought to improve infrastructure efficiency, successfully enhanced grid stability and provided flexible and rapid solutions to address emergencies and increased electricity demand.
The Minister highlighted a notable improvement in fuel consumption rates this year compared to 2014, indicating enhanced operational efficiency. Furthermore, Esmat reviewed the progress of green hydrogen projects and seawater desalination projects. He mentioned that several additional desalination projects are underway through existing power plants, in collaboration with specialized international partners, to provide sustainable desalinated water sources and localize the associated technologies and industries.
