Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that the first phase of Cairo Metro Line 4 is a significant addition to Egypt's public transport infrastructure. Described as a strategic initiative, this project is intended to connect various areas within Cairo and Giza to new urban cities, promoting modern and sustainable public transport as part of the nation's efforts to establish an advanced transport network for the 'New Republic.'
According to State Information Service Egypt, Madbouly made these comments while inspecting the first phase of the project on Sunday, September 13, 2026. This phase extends 19 kilometers and includes 17 stations, 16 of which are underground and one that is a surface station, stretching from the west of the Ring Road on the outskirts of 6 October City to Fustat station. The prime minister's inspection was part of a broader tour covering several transport projects in Cairo and Giza.
Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir emphasized that the project is a critical component of the Transport Ministry's comprehensive plan to expand modern and sustainable urban transport. During the inspection, Madbouly reviewed work sites starting with the heavy maintenance workshop for Line 4, which covers approximately 316,500 square meters and includes 30 buildings dedicated to various maintenance activities for 23 trains.
Madbouly also assessed the status of train supply and manufacturing, noting that five trains had arrived, with the latest arriving on September 5, and are undergoing tests. Factory tests for additional trains are completed, and manufacturing continues for others to meet the line's operational goals of 23 trains.
The delegation then moved to Hadayek Al-Ashgar station, marking the first station of the phase located west of the Ring Road on 6 October City's outskirts. With construction 68.4 percent complete, El-Wazir reported that the overall progress of the first phase is at 65 percent, with varying completion rates across different construction aspects.
Ibrahim Bakhit, Deputy Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, explained that the entire Metro Line 4 will be executed in four phases. Work on the second phase, which will stretch from Fustat to New Cairo and consist of 21 stations, has commenced. Studies for subsequent phases are ongoing, with plans to link the line with major metro lines and monorails for enhanced connectivity.
El-Wazir highlighted the line's importance in connecting Cairo and Giza governorates and its role as the first metro line linking 6 October City and New Cairo. The line will serve densely populated and tourist-heavy areas, aiming to transport 1.5 million passengers daily once fully operational, thereby acting as both a transportation and tourism development link.
