Parliament Deliberates Delay of Criminal Procedure Law Implementation

Cairo:The House of Representatives engaged in an extraordinary plenary session to deliberate on a bill proposing the postponement of the new Criminal Procedure Law's implementation until October 1, 2027. This bill was initiated by over one-tenth of the House's members, adhering to parliamentary procedures.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the session was prompted by the final approval from the House's Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee. The committee, led by Counsellor Mohamed Eid Mahgoub, reviewed a bill submitted by lawmaker Hisham El-Hosary and others. Mahgoub highlighted that the delay was necessary due to incomplete infrastructure and preparations needed to implement several provisions of the law. He assured that the postponement would not compromise defendants' rights.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Hani Hanna expressed the government's support for the bill, emphasizing that the delay would allow for the law's full and uniform application across all courts. Hanna mentioned that state institutions are collaborating to finalize the necessary preparations for implementing the law. He pointed out that while some courts are ready, others, including criminal appeal courts, are still working on completing the required infrastructure to ensure proper coordination and integration for the law's comprehensive enforcement.
