Cairo: The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) has announced a commitment of approximately EGP 2 billion towards community development initiatives in 2025. This investment will be directed across various sectors, including healthcare, education, economic empowerment, social protection, environmental sustainability, and housing. The bank's strategy supports Egypt Vision 2030 and aligns with the Central Bank of Egypt's sustainable development goals.
According to State Information Service Egypt, NBE's 2025 community development strategy aims to deliver measurable social impacts, particularly in Upper Egypt. The bank is channeling resources into projects that enhance access to essential services and improve the quality of life for underserved communities.
Healthcare remains the primary focus, with nearly EGP 862 million allocated to support over 15 hospitals and medical centers nationwide. Mohamed El-Etreby, CEO of NBE, highlighted that the 2025 strategy expands the bank's reach in Upper Egypt. "These initiatives improve access to essential services while creating a direct and lasting development impact," El-Etreby stated, emphasizing healthcare as a top priority.
Mohamed Awara, Director of Community Development at NBE, noted that the funding supports treatment for children at hospitals like Children's Cancer Hospital 57357 and ECMO services at Cairo University Hospitals. The initiative also involves equipping intensive care units and funding pediatric surgeries, among other healthcare projects.
In education, NBE invested around EGP 239 million, contributing to the development of 258 schools and more than 1,300 scholarships, in partnership with institutions such as ElSewedy University of Technology and Nile University. The bank also supports teacher training programs, benefiting over 7,000 students.
In social inclusion efforts, NBE provided 340 wheelchairs and organized Ramadan tents, serving meals and distributing food boxes to vulnerable families. Additionally, around 700 employees engaged in volunteer activities.
Housing projects for low-income families and economic empowerment programs for women and youth are also part of NBE's initiatives. The bank partners with organizations like Orman Association and supports entrepreneurship centers to foster innovation-driven startups.
Dina Abu Taleb, Head of Marketing and Community Development at NBE, stated that the bank adopts an integrated approach to address local community needs, especially in Upper Egypt. "We conduct field assessments to identify priorities, ensuring resources are directed where they can deliver the greatest impact," Abu Taleb explained.
Environmental and cultural heritage projects receive EGP 508.5 million, including coral reef restoration in the Red Sea and supporting the Grand Egyptian Museum's opening. NBE also contributed EGP 50 million to the Egypt Fund for Honoring Martyrs.
NBE's community development efforts have earned it several international awards, recognizing its role in corporate social responsibility and its significant impact in Egypt.
