Irrigation Minister Announces Integrated System to Tackle Water Scarcity

Jeddah: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam asserted that the challenges of water scarcity served as a catalyst for developing an integrated system aimed at maximizing the benefit from every drop of water, improving water-use efficiency, expanding non-conventional water resources and employing technology and data to support decision-making through the second generation water system (2.0).

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam highlighted major water reuse and treatment projects, including the Bahr El-Baqar, Al-Mahsama and New Delta treatment plants, as well as the development of monitoring and follow-up systems using digital models, satellite imagery, early warning systems and drones.

He also stressed the adoption of the water-food-energy-environment nexus approach to achieve sustainable development and maximize returns from limited natural resources.

The Minister made these remarks during the high-level ministerial session held as part of the 7th Arab Water Forum, titled "innovative Arab solutions, financing and inclusive governance for a secure water future."

The forum is being held within the activities of the First Saudi Water Week in Jeddah, with the participation of ministers, senior officials, and representatives of regional and international organizations concerned with the water sector.

The session brought together high-level representatives from several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, along with regional and international partners, to discuss ways of strengthening Arab cooperation in innovative solutions, financing and inclusive governance in the water sector.

Sewilam highlighted the launch of the second generation water system leaders program, which aims to prepare young professionals capable of leading institutional development, digital transformation and addressing future challenges.
