Cairo:Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Hani Sewilam emphasized the necessity of fostering dialogue and consultation among Nile Basin countries to establish a consensus-based legal framework. This framework aims to address the interests and concerns of all involved nations, promoting cooperation in managing shared water resources to ensure water security and sustainable development.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam made these remarks during a session titled 'Managing Shared Water Resources under International Water Law for Regional Peace and Stability' at the ninth Cairo Water Week. He discussed Egypt's vision of applying principles such as equitable and reasonable use, avoiding harm, and ensuring prior notification into actionable steps to enhance cooperation and shared prosperity.

The Minister underscored the importance of an integrated approach to water resources, highlighting opportunities like rainwater harvesting, rain-fed agriculture, improved soil moisture management, and groundwater utilization. These methods could alleviate pressure on the shared river, which supplies approximately 98 percent of Egypt's water resources. He praised the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for its supportive data and studies, underlining that maximizing shared benefits requires collaboration among Nile Basin countries.

Additionally, Sewilam emphasized the significance of diversifying energy sources by expanding solar and wind power projects to meet the increasing electricity demand without disrupting the shared river's flow. He mentioned potential joint renewable energy projects and enhanced electricity grid connections to create an integrated regional energy market.

Furthermore, Sewilam discussed cooperation in the Southern Nile Basin, where data exchange and discussions have led to the identification of 36 bankable projects. He reiterated that prior notification is essential for development and project success. He concluded by stating that shared water resources should be a means to strengthen ties and build confidence among countries, supporting sustainable development, peace, and regional stability.
