Industry Minister Engages in Strategic Talks with Cemex Delegation on Sustainable Industrial Development

Cairo: Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem engaged in discussions with a delegation from Cemex, led by Antonio Daz, President of Cemex Egypt and UAE, to explore the company’s vision for aligning with the State’s industrial development plans and promoting a sustainable industry.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting underscored the Ministry of Industry’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at reducing environmentally harmful emissions through the adoption of modern technologies and manufacturing innovations. Emphasis was placed on energy consumption rationalization and the adoption of alternative fuels. These efforts are intended to bolster the competitiveness of Egyptian exports, particularly in European Union markets, by adhering to the standards of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Minister Hashem emphasized the necessity for Cemex to increase its production capacity to meet the demands of the local market and to support the ongoing urban development and national projects. Furthermore, there is a growing demand from international markets for cement and related products, necessitating an expansion of cement feeder industries to enhance local manufacturing and increase added value.

The meeting also featured an overview of Cemex’s global operations, highlighting its establishment nearly 120 years ago. Currently, Cemex owns 52 factories across 26 countries and employs approximately 39,000 workers. The company’s efforts towards achieving sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint were discussed, with a focus on achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Discussions extended to the activities of Cemex’s plant in Upper Egypt, which has been operational for 27 years, focusing on cement and clinker production. The company’s projects in waste treatment and converting waste into alternative fuel (RDF) were also addressed, showcasing efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and produce environmentally friendly products.

Antonio Daz reaffirmed Egypt’s strategic importance to Cemex, expressing the company’s commitment to aligning operations with State priorities to foster a sustainable industry. He underscored Cemex’s dedication to providing advanced low-carbon building solutions that support the Egyptian economy.
