Grand Egyptian Museum Board Meeting Highlights Recent Developments

Cairo:Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy chaired a meeting of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Authority's Board of Directors at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.According to State Information Service Egypt, during the meeting, GEM CEO Ahmed Ghoneim provided an overview of the museum's key activities and recent events. This included visits by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and his wife, alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, during his official visit to Egypt earlier this month.The meeting addressed visitor numbers and revenues since the museum's official opening in November 2025 through the end of August. Approximately four million people have visited the museum, with numbers increasing as the new tourist season begins.The board approved the museum authority's amended financial statements and final accounts for the fiscal year 2025/2026. They also accepted a French donation of humidity-monitoring devices for the museum's galleries as pa rt of the Egyptian-French archaeological cooperation project, which aims to enhance preventive conservation by tracking environmental conditions around the artifacts.Additionally, the board was informed about memorandums of understanding being developed with various international universities and archaeological museums to bolster cooperation with the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority.
