FM: Independent Palestinian State Key to Sustainable Peace in ME

Doha: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty asserted on Saturday, 6/12/2025, that no solution can ensure lasting peace and security for the entire Middle East without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty noted that Egypt had agreed to US President Donald Trump's peace plan, which includes two crucial provisions: preventing the annexation of the West Bank and prohibiting forced displacement. This statement was made during the minister's remarks at a session titled 'Accounting for Gaza: Reassessing Global Responsibilities and Pathways to Peace' held within the Doha Forum under the theme 'Anchoring Justice.'

The session also featured Spanish Foreign Minister Jos© Manuel Albares, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and Advisor to the Saudi Foreign Minister Manal Radwan. Abdelatty stressed that Egypt will not govern Gaza, nor will any foreign state assume control of the enclave, affirming that the Palestinian people alone must govern themselves and that the Rafah crossing will never serve as a gateway for displacing Palestinians from their land.

He underscored Egypt's unwavering commitment to supporting Gaza with humanitarian aid, noting that 70% of the assistance delivered to the enclave, amounting to 600,000 tons of food and medical supplies, came from the Egyptian people and government. The minister pointed out that Trump's plan stipulates reopening the Rafah crossing in both directions and does not permit its use as a one-way channel or as a mechanism for displacing Palestinians or altering the demographic status of the enclave.

Abdelatty added that establishing a ceasefire remains an urgent priority as it is the essential entry point to move to the second stage of Trump's peace plan. This phase requires the unhindered and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid, early recovery efforts, and reconstruction initiatives capable of alleviating suffering and restoring hope to Gaza's population.

He highlighted the pivotal importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803, especially regarding the role of the International Stabilization Force as a peacekeeping mission. This force, along with a Palestinian technocratic committee and an international peace council, represents temporary arrangements paving the way for the full return of the Palestinian Authority and ensuring geographic continuity between the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Abdelatty asserted that the Rafah crossing remains fully operational on the Egyptian side, but obstacles on the Palestinian side, controlled by Israel, hinder movement, alongside five other Israeli-controlled crossings whose opening remains Israel's responsibility.
