Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty met with ambassadors of European Union member states accredited to Egypt as part of regular consultations between the Foreign Ministry and diplomatic missions in Cairo. The meeting aimed to update the ambassadors on Egypt's modernization efforts across various sectors and the country's pivotal role in promoting regional peace and stability.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty emphasized the strengthened Egyptian-European relations since their elevation to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024. He highlighted the significance of the first Egypt-EU Summit in Brussels in October 2025 and discussed preparations for the next summit in Cairo in 2027, including the third Egypt-EU Investment Conference. The outcomes of the Egypt-EU Association Council meeting held last June were welcomed, with an emphasis on convening new rounds of subcommittee meetings under the Egypt-EU Association Agreement.
The Foreign Minister addressed Egypt's challenges in hosting millions of refugees and asylum seekers, advocating for a comprehensive approach that tackles migration's root causes. Abdelatty firmly rejected European media reports suggesting the establishment of refugee camps in southern Mediterranean countries, including Egypt, deeming such proposals unacceptable.
The meeting also covered regional issues, particularly the Palestinian cause. Abdelatty praised a statement by foreign ministers from several EU countries supporting the two-state solution and banning imports of settlement products. He reaffirmed Egypt's rejection of Israeli annexation policies and emphasized the need to uphold the historical and legal status quo at Jerusalem's holy sites. Abdelatty called for the implementation of former President Donald Trump's plan to resolve the Gaza conflict, ensuring security, stability, and humanitarian support.
Abdelatty discussed the situation in Sudan, asserting that any threat to Sudan's sovereignty is a red line for Egypt. He also addressed the Nile River issue, underscoring its existential importance and rejecting unilateral actions in the Eastern Nile Basin. Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, focusing on developments in Libya, Lebanon, and Iran. He highlighted the impacts of current crises on energy and food security in Egypt and the Global South.
