Cairo: Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat stated on Monday, September 21, 2026, that the development plan and studies for the national electricity grid constitute a continuous process. He explained that during the current summer season, the grid's capacity successfully managed the surge in loads, pointing out that work continues in accordance with an integrated vision and specific executive plans to achieve energy security, modernize, upgrade, and reinforce the unified grid, increase its capacity, and improve the level of services provided.
According to State Information Service Egypt, this announcement came during the minister's meeting with the strategic committee tasked with implementing work programs, evaluating performance across affiliate sectors, and following up on achieving the interim and strategic goals for each sector. During the meeting, developments and various scenarios to secure the national electricity grid and ensure the sustainability and continuity of the power supply were discussed.
Esmat reviewed the progress of the work plan implementation across all sectors within the framework of the National Energy Strategy, constructing the energy mix, and developing and strengthening the unified grid to integrate new energy capacities, as well as solar and wind power projects to be connected to the grid, along with the timeline and target dates for each project.
The meeting addressed the implementation progress of the work plan aimed at improving energy efficiency in the residential and industrial sectors, rationalizing electricity consumption, enhancing energy security, and reviewing the status of technical inputs required for the capacity expansion plan to meet expected future loads.
The minister also followed up on the operational developments of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, as well as the implementation status of constructing several storage stations-both co-located with renewable energy projects and standalone facilities-to maximize the utilization of renewable energy and ensure power grid stability.
Discussions further touched upon future projects and the electricity and renewable energy sector's plans to reinforce the unified grid and increase its capacity to accommodate new additions, particularly from renewable energy sources. The minister emphasized the continuation of follow-ups, reviews, and situational assessments under the phased plan implemented over the past summer, which enabled the electrical grid to handle soaring loads and unprecedented increases in consumption.
He noted that efforts remain ongoing to ensure grid stability, guarantee uninterrupted power supply, integrate renewable energy capacity into the energy mix, apply operational efficiency and quality standards, and enhance service delivery.
