Cairo:Egypt's food industry achieved a milestone in export performance from January to August 2026, recording the highest export value for the first eight months of any year in its history, with a total of $5.128 billion.
According to State Information Service Egypt, food industry exports rose significantly from $4.629 billion during the same period in 2025, marking a 10.8% growth and an increase of over $499 million. This growth signals the expanding competitiveness of Egyptian food products in global markets.
The Food Export Council highlighted that this performance reflects the success of exporting companies in expanding into foreign markets, with support from a diversified production base and higher added value for many products. The council, in cooperation with relevant authorities, has actively supported efforts to facilitate exports and access to overseas markets.
Export growth was primarily driven by the expansion into a greater number of markets and products, rather than relying on a limited set of destinations. A total of 110 markets increased their imports of Egyptian food products, with 2,731 active exporting companies reaching 179 markets worldwide.
The first quarter of 2026 saw exports of $1.769 billion, a 7.8% increase from the previous year's corresponding quarter. The second quarter experienced a 15.6% growth to about $2.050 billion. July and August contributed exports of $681 million and $628 million respectively, maintaining the growth trajectory.
Arab countries remained the top destination, importing $2.419 billion worth of products, an 8.9% increase from the previous year, accounting for 47% of total exports. The European Union followed with a 16% growth to $1.124 billion, making up 22% of total exports. Exports to the United States rose to $334 million, while non-Arab African countries received $356 million, a 3.3% increase.
Saudi Arabia was the largest importer, with $423 million worth of products, an 18% increase. The United States and Jordan followed, while Spain recorded significant growth, nearly doubling its imports to $208 million.
Frozen strawberries led the product categories, with exports of $617 million, followed by beverage concentrates and edible oils. Chocolate exports saw the largest increase, nearly doubling to $301 million. Overall, the top 30 products accounted for 89% of the total food exports, valued at $4.577 billion.
