Egyptian and Canadian Foreign Ministers Discuss Strengthening Economic Ties

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held discussions with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, on enhancing cooperation and economic relations between Egypt and Canada. The conversation took place over a phone call on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty congratulated Anand on her appointment as foreign minister and emphasized Egypt's commitment to advancing economic and trade ties with Canada. He encouraged Canadian companies to invest in Egypt, particularly in the sectors of energy, agriculture, and water resources. Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's recent initiatives to support the private sector and improve the business climate.The Egyptian foreign minister stressed the importance of building on the outcomes of the 12th round of political consultations between the two countries, which included a visit by a delegation of Egyptian businessmen to Ottawa in April. The phone call also addressed developments in the Mid dle East, with Abdelatty briefing Anand on Egypt's efforts to resume the ceasefire in Gaza, ensure the release of hostages and detainees, and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.Abdelatty outlined Egypt's plans to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza once a ceasefire is achieved. He called for a political horizon for the Palestinian cause, proposing the establishment of an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Additionally, he urged both Iran and Israel to comply with the ceasefire and called for regional and international efforts to support any agreement and reduce tensions.The conversation also included discussions on regional issues such as developments in Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and Red Sea security. Canadian Foreign Minister Anand praised Egypt's efforts to resume the ceasefire in Gaza and its role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, recognizing Egypt as a cornerstone of regional stabilit y.
