New alamein: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty affirmed that relations between Egypt and Turkey are based on solid foundations and a shared understanding of the importance of bilateral ties in achieving regional security and stability, particularly amid the unprecedented challenges facing the region. Abdelatty made the remarks during a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in New Alamein.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the press conference marked the second meeting of the Joint Planning Group between Egypt and Turkey, reflecting a mutual political will to advance bilateral relations. Abdelatty highlighted the fruitful discussions, which included developing clear action plans for cooperation across various ministries. The meeting followed the outcomes of the Strategic Cooperation Council's previous session held in Cairo last February.
The discussions assessed progress in bilateral cooperation, particularly in economic and trade relations, which have seen significant momentum. Both countries aspire to achieve a trade target of $15 billion, up from the current $9 billion. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of ongoing technical consultations to leverage the free trade agreement, encouraging economic forums and business exchanges to foster sustainable partnerships.
Investment cooperation was a focal point, with Egypt welcoming Turkish investments and highlighting incentives and reforms to improve the investment climate. Talks also explored enhancing cooperation in industry, technology transfer, energy, and logistics, aiming to boost regional connectivity.
Abdelatty and Fidan also addressed regional issues, including the Palestinian territories, Syria, and Libya, emphasizing the need for political solutions and strengthening regional stability. The ministers reiterated their rejection of Israeli violations and settlement expansions and affirmed their commitment to Libya's unity and stability, advocating for a Libyan-led solution.
The dialogue extended to Sudan, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa, stressing political resolutions and cooperation in Africa. International issues, such as the Ukraine crisis and the Strait of Hormuz, were also discussed, underscoring the importance of maintaining global trade routes.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expressed satisfaction with the progress in Egyptian-Turkish relations, which are developing across multiple tracks, including military cooperation and maritime collaboration. He highlighted the shared efforts on Gaza and Palestinian issues and the convergence of views on Libya.
Fidan emphasized the need for international cooperation to address humanitarian challenges in Gaza and praised Egypt's commitment to regional peace. He concluded by expressing Turkey's commitment to strengthening ties with Egypt, particularly in economic and trade sectors.
