Cairo: Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and Cypriot Ambassador in Cairo Polly Ioannou followed up on Thursday, September 24, 2026, the implementation of the electricity interconnection project between the two countries, as part of efforts to link Egypt's national electricity grid with the European electricity network.

According to State Information Service Egypt, During the meeting that held in the presence of the ambassador's accompanying delegation at the ministry's headquarters in the New Capital, the parties dealt with ways to support and strengthen cooperation and partnership between the two nations, and increase investments in renewable energy.

Meanwhile, the Minister praised the depth of relations between the two countries and their strategic partnership across various fields, particularly the energy sector.

The talks also addressed increasing reliance on renewable energy in the energy mix, boosting joint investments in clean and renewable energy generation and transmission, and upgrading, developing and strengthening the electricity grids in both countries to accommodate and transmit new energy capacities.

For her part, the ambassador praised the historic relations between Egypt and Cyprus, noting the importance the Cypriot government attaches to the electricity interconnection project and highlighting its economic benefits and role in further strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two countries.
