Egypt Condemns Israeli Knesset’s Death Penalty Legislation for Palestinian Prisoners

Cairo: Egypt strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset's approval of a law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, describing the move as a serious and unprecedented escalation.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Egyptian government stated that the legislation represents a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, severely undermining the basic guarantees of a fair trial. In a statement released on Monday, March 30, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates criticized the law for entrenching systematic discrimination and reinforcing an apartheid system by applying different standards to Palestinians compared with others, thereby violating fundamental principles of justice and equality before the law.

The statement further expressed that the legislation constitutes a flagrant breach of the legal status in the occupied Palestinian territories, where Israeli laws do not apply to Palestinian residents of the West Bank. Egypt reiterated its repeated warnings over Israeli violations in the West Bank and Gaza amid the ongoing military escalation, emphasizing the serious implications of the measure and its potential repercussions on stability in the occupied territories and efforts to contain tensions.

Additionally, Egypt reaffirmed its categorical rejection of all unilateral Israeli policies and actions. The statement urged the international community to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities by taking immediate and decisive action to halt these violations, protect the Palestinian people, and safeguard their legitimate rights in line with international law and UN resolutions.
