Egypt Applauds U.S. Decision to Classify Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Group

Cairo: Egypt welcomed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the United States' announcement designating the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as a 'specially designated global terrorist' (SDGT) entity, describing the move as a decisive step that underscores the danger of the group's ideology and its threat to regional and international security.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the foreign ministry stated that the U.S. designation reflects the seriousness of the Muslim Brotherhood's extremist nature and validates Egypt's long-standing position that the group is founded on violence, extremism and incitement and exploits religion to achieve political objectives.

The ministry praised the efforts of the U.S. administration, led by President Donald Trump, in combating international terrorism and confronting extremist organizations, saying these efforts fully align with Egypt's firm stance against the Muslim Brotherhood. The statement said Egypt and other countries in the region have suffered for decades from the group's activities, which included attacks targeting police, the armed forces, and civilians in what it described as a systematic attempt to undermine national security and stability.

The ministry said the U.S. decision confirms the correctness of Egypt's tough approach toward the Muslim Brotherhood following the June 30, 2013 revolution, which it said was taken to protect the will of the Egyptian people and preserve state institutions after the group sought to seize control of the state and impose its agenda through violence and terrorism.

The ministry added that the sacrifices Egypt has made in its fight against terrorism demonstrate its deep commitment to confronting extremist ideology and violence in order to safeguard national security and state resources.

The statement also reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening international cooperation in combating terrorism in all its forms, cutting off extremist groups' ideological and financial sources of support, and continuing coordination with international partners to counter organizations that threaten international peace and security, in defense of the stability of Egypt, the region, and the wider world.
