Egypt and Sweden Discuss Enhanced Cooperation in Space Science and Seismology

Cairo:Talks were held between Bassem Nabawy, President of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), and Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt, the Swedish ambassador to Egypt, focusing on strengthening scientific and research cooperation between Egypt and Sweden. The discussions emphasized the exchange of expertise in space science, astronomical observation, applied geophysics, seismic monitoring technologies, and disaster risk reduction.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting took place during Ambassador Danfelt's visit to the institute. The visit aimed to acquaint the ambassador with NRIAG's scientific capabilities and activities in space science, Earth sciences, and seismology.

During the visit, Ambassador Danfelt was taken on a tour of several specialized departments and laboratories, beginning with the Space Research Laboratory. Here, he was briefed on NRIAG's latest space research projects. The tour included the Earth Dynamics Department and the Earth Gravity Laboratory, where Danfelt reviewed the equipment used for monitoring Earth's crust movements.

The ambassador also visited the National Seismic Network, receiving an overview of the mechanisms used for seismic activity monitoring and data processing. He explored the network's data center, where real-time seismic data reception and processing occur.

The visit concluded at the institute's Historical Museum, where Danfelt viewed artifacts and historical instruments, including hourglasses and sundials, documenting NRIAG's scientific heritage. The museum also features historical photographs of King Farouk I and early scientific instruments.

Both parties expressed interest in furthering academic and research cooperation, aiming to expand the exchange of expertise and support broader scientific partnerships between Egypt and Sweden.
