Egypt and Greece Discuss Strengthening Energy Sector Cooperation

Athens:Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi and Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou met to discuss enhancing collaboration in the energy sector, focusing on natural gas, low-carbon initiatives, and regional energy security.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting in Athens on October 7, 2026, addressed the connection of Egyptian and Greek gas infrastructure to facilitate the flow of Eastern Mediterranean gas resources to European markets. They also explored opportunities in natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) trading, leveraging the partnership between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Greece's Copelouzos Group.

The ministers reviewed progress on a memorandum of understanding concerning carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and discussed cooperation on hydrogen and low-carbon energy. Badawi emphasized the importance of joint technical studies and the development of regulatory and commercial frameworks for emissions-reduction projects, drawing on Greek expertise.

The potential involvement of Egyptian petroleum sector companies in energy and infrastructure projects in Greece was also part of the discussions. To strengthen economic ties, they prepared for the upcoming Egyptian-Greek Energy Business Forum to connect businesses from both countries.

Additionally, the establishment of a high-level joint energy working group was discussed, outlining an action plan and follow-up mechanisms. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of continued coordination within the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) to advance regional strategies into actionable projects that improve energy security and market integration.

Senior Egyptian officials, including Undersecretary for Safety, Environment, Energy Efficiency, and Climate Mahmoud Nagy and Head of the Central Administration for Legal Affairs Mohamed El-Bagoury, also attended the meeting.
