Egypt Affirms Unwavering Support for UNRWA Amid Israeli Restrictions

Cairo: Egypt has announced its unwavering support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and other humanitarian organizations operating in the occupied Palestinian territories. It emphasized the essential role these agencies play in delivering services to Palestinian refugees and civilians.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Egyptian foreign ministry issued a statement condemning the Israeli occupation forces for demolishing an UNRWA facility in occupied East Jerusalem. The ministry called this act a blatant violation of international law and resolutions, and an unacceptable breach of United Nations institutions' immunity and property.

The statement expressed Egypt's deep concern over Israel's restrictions and abuses against humanitarian agencies, which are hindering their operations and affecting aid delivery. Such actions, the ministry stated, breach international humanitarian law and the protection rules for UN institutions and humanitarian workers.

UNRWA, as highlighted in the statement, is central to providing education, health, and relief services to millions of Palestinian refugees. Any attempt to undermine its role would harm refugee rights and neglect the international community's responsibilities toward them.

Furthermore, Egypt linked UNRWA's existence to the broader Palestinian cause and the international commitment to resolve the refugee issue. It called for a just and lasting solution, including the right of return for Palestinian refugees as per UN General Assembly Resolution 194.

Cairo urged the global community to fulfill its legal and moral duties by protecting humanitarian institutions and their staff, ensuring they can operate freely, and preventing actions that could undermine UNRWA's mission.

Lastly, Egypt reiterated its steadfast support for Palestinian rights, advocating for the establishment of an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as the path to lasting peace in the region.
