Cairo: The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the successful completion of restoration efforts for several archaeological structures in the historic city of Pelusium (Tell El-Farama). This initiative is a significant part of Egypt's broader Sinai development plan, aiming to preserve the nation's cultural heritage while fostering sustainable development and tourism in the region.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the restoration was meticulously overseen by the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). The focus was on safeguarding Pelusium's unique architectural heritage and ensuring the site's integration into Egypt's larger tourism and cultural development strategies. Pelusium, located in North Sinai, is a city of great historical importance, having served as a crucial center throughout various periods of Egyptian history.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy stated that the project underscores the government's dedication to revitalizing archaeological sites in Sinai, enhancing their role as cultural and touristic landmarks. He emphasized the importance of preserving the historical and architectural identity of Sinai as part of Egypt's national development strategy.
SCA Secretary-General Mohamed Ismail Khaled highlighted Pelusium's role as a historic gateway to Egypt, noting that the restoration efforts were aimed at preserving the site's architectural elements and historical legacy for future generations. The project involved the structural reinforcement and conservation of several key monuments, including the walls, towers, and gates of the ancient Pelusium Fortress, which covers nearly 80,000 square meters, as well as significant Roman and Christian-era remains.
Among the notable restorations were the Roman Senate building, the southern Roman bath, the ruins of the western Rotunda Church, and the southern church, one of the city's key ecclesiastical structures. Special attention was given to the intricate restoration of inscribed lintels from the Temple of Zeus Kasios, preserving their artistic and historical significance. The restoration was conducted using advanced scientific techniques, involving detailed analysis of original building materials to ensure accurate and authentic conservation.
