Communications Minister Witnesses Signing of Egypt’s Largest Data Center, Sovereign AI Center

Cairo: Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hendy announced a strategic partnership on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, involving Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric, and Cassava Technologies. This collaboration will lead to the establishment of Africa Data Centers Egypt, which will include one of Egypt's largest data centers and the country's first sovereign AI data center.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the project will initially provide 20 megawatts of capacity over a span of three years, with plans for expansion to 200 megawatts. The venture is expected to attract an initial $200 million in foreign direct investment, which could rise to $1 billion upon completion. Additionally, the project is projected to create up to 200 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology stated that the project will bolster Egypt's digital infrastructure, support cloud and AI services, and enhance data sovereignty by enabling secure local data hosting and processing.

Vodafone Business and Cassava Technologies have committed to providing advanced computing and Nvidia technologies, including GPU-as-a-Service, to facilitate large-scale AI applications within Egypt.
