Cairo: Minister of Transport Kamel El Wazir has reviewed the comprehensive plan aimed at finalizing Egypt's modern public transportation system. The initiative seeks to integrate various projects into a cohesive, safe, and sustainable network to better serve the population.According to State Information Service Egypt, the minister emphasized the government's commitment to the plan initiated in 2019, under the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. The strategy focuses on establishing a nationwide, green, and environmentally friendly mass transit network.The plan is built on three main pillars: intercity transport via railways, electric high-speed trains, and buses; urban transport within major cities; and linking modern transport modes with feeder lines to connect residential communities. The railway network, stretching approximately 10,000 km, is undergoing development and upgrades, including modernization of signaling systems. Additionally, around 400 km of new railway lines will be introduced to serve major industrial zones in cities like 10th of Ramadan, Sixth of October, Sadat, and Borg El Arab.Wazir noted that the current railway network operates about 900 trains daily, utilizing around 1,000 locomotives and 4,000 carriages. The network currently serves between 1.1 million and 1.2 million passengers daily, with a target of reaching 1.5 million by 2030.The electric high-speed train network is also a major component of the plan, with a total length of 2,250 km. The first three lines, totaling 2,000 km, are under construction, including the line from Ain Sokhna to Matrouh via Cairo and Alexandria, and a line from October to Abu Simbel. A fourth line, stretching 250 km from Port Said to Alexandria, will be developed in partnership with the private sector.The minister highlighted the progress on the second high-speed train line, with the three lines expected to carry 2.5 million passengers daily once operational. This will bring the total passenger capacity of the railway and electric high-speed train networks to about 4 million passengers a day by 2030.In terms of intercity bus transport, the Transport Ministry operates around 2,000 buses through its four companies, while private-sector companies operate an additional 4,000 buses under the supervision of the Ministry's Land Transport Regulatory Authority.Metro Line 4, extending from October to Fustat, is targeted to begin trial operations in mid-2027. Subsequent phases will extend the line to various key locations, with expectations to serve between 1 to 1.25 million passengers daily. Meanwhile, Metro Line 5 has been replaced by a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, with the initial phase already operational and the second phase scheduled to commence soon.Wazir concluded by detailing plans for Metro Line 6, which will connect El-Khosous to Zahraa El-Maadi and further to New Cairo, linking passengers with Greater Cairo and the electric high-speed train network.
