Cairo: Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) Chairman Mostafa Sheikhon inspected development works at West Port Said Port during his first visit to the northern zone since assuming leadership of the authority last August.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Sheikhon reviewed the port's two-phase development project. The first phase is complete, and work on phases 2A and 2B has reached 60% and 26%, respectively. West Port Said handled 451,600 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in fiscal year 2025/2026, including 207,500 transit TEUs, accounting for 45.9% of total container traffic. Transit volumes surged 301.7% year on year. Sheikhon noted these figures underscore West Port Said's transformation from a gateway port into a regional container hub.
East Port Said also demonstrated robust growth, handling 5.9 million TEUs, including 5.5 million transit TEUs, marking a 41.1% increase from the previous fiscal year. Additionally, ship bunkering services in the northern zone served 2,289 vessels with 1.25 million tons of fuel, representing annual increases of 83.6% in the number of vessels and 65.3% in fuel volumes.
Sheikhon emphasized that these developments highlight the expanding role of SCZONE ports in maritime trade and logistics despite geopolitical challenges affecting global supply chains.
