Prime Minister’s Electricity Load-Shedding Remarks Misinterpreted, Says Egyptian Cabinet

Cairo:The Cabinet's Media Center has refuted claims attributed to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly regarding the potential for electricity load-shedding cuts lasting six to eight hours daily.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Media Center issued a statement on Thursday, October 22, 2026, clarifying that the Prime Minister's remarks were taken out of context and did not indicate any decision to implement load shedding.

The comments were made during a session titled 'Egypt's Energy Journey National Achievements and Future Prospects,' where Prime Minister Madbouly discussed potential strategies for dealing with increasing energy prices. He presented three options transferring the entire cost increase to citizens, having the government absorb the costs, or maintaining current budget allocations and buying petroleum products at the new prices based on available resources.

Madbouly noted that the third option might only satisfy 50-60% of citizens' needs, which could lead the government to consider more extreme measures, such as electricity load-shedding cuts for six to eight hours a day.
