PM Warns of Nile Flood Risk

Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly warned on Thursday, October 2, 2025, of the impact of rising Nile floodwaters, stating that large volumes of water have been flowing for several days, affecting neighboring Sudan. He noted that forecasts indicate above-average discharges through October, with low-lying areas, including riverbanks and informal housing places, likely to face flooding, especially in the governorates of Monufia and Beheira.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Madbouly, during a press conference following the weekly cabinet meeting, attributed the situation in Sudan to Ethiopia's unilateral management of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) without coordination with downstream countries. He emphasized that authorities had prepared in advance for the flooding and warned all encroachers that riverbank areas are expected to be submerged. Madbouly stressed that these lands are part of the Nile's natural water system and must be kept clear as part of flood response efforts.
