Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Saturday, September 12, 2026, that expanding cancer treatment is a major priority for Egypt as the government works to provide specialized medical services closer to patients across the country. Madbouly made the remarks during a visit to the Kafr El Sheikh Oncology Center, where he inspected treatment facilities, medical equipment and services provided to cancer patients.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the PM said that expanding oncology services across governorates would reduce the need for patients and their families to travel long distances for diagnosis and treatment. He called for specialized centers to have modern medical equipment, trained staff and regular maintenance. For his part, Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said that the ministry has 13 oncology centers across 11 governorates, including new centers in Tanta and Menouf that are expected to begin operations.
Another 17 oncology units operate in hospitals run by the Secretariat of Specialized Medical Centers. More than 41,000 new cancer patients were received and treated at the secretariat's hospitals last year. The facilities provided more than 290,000 chemotherapy sessions and 148,000 radiotherapy sessions, while more than 64,000 cancer surgeries were performed.
It is noteworthy that the Kafr El Sheikh Oncology Center has a capacity of 138 beds and provides chemotherapy, radiotherapy, cancer surgery, nuclear medicine, pediatric oncology, intensive care and diagnostic services. The center has 40 chemotherapy chairs, 14 intensive care beds, 11 outpatient clinics and three operating rooms, along with PET/CT, MRI, CT and advanced radiotherapy equipment.
Between 2024 and 2026, the center recorded around 110,000 outpatient visits, performed more than 3,000 surgeries and provided more than 15,000 outpatient chemotherapy sessions. Madbouly also met patients and their families during the visit and reviewed the availability of treatment through health insurance and state-funded healthcare programs.
