Cairo:Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired a meeting of the Supreme Committee of the National Council for Climate Change on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The meeting, held at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, was attended by several ministers and senior officials.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the committee approved the launch of the updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0), which will be uploaded to the official website of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This update reflects Egypt's latest commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The updated NDC includes significant changes, such as adding the water resources and irrigation sector to the mitigation sectors, now totaling eight, and increasing the number of mitigation policies and measures to 37. The health sector has been added to the adaptation sectors, bringing their total to five, while the number of adaptation policies and measures has risen to 29. The 2035 emissions-reduction targets for the electricity, oil and gas, and transport sectors have also been revised.
Additionally, the committee approved issuing an authorization letter for the international use of emissions-reduction outcomes after reviewing the status of emissions-reduction certificates from Clean Development Mechanism projects in Egypt. This is part of the national effort to achieve carbon neutrality goals.
Furthermore, the committee agreed to issue letters of intent for two projects aimed at reducing nitrous oxide emissions at nitric acid plants operated by SEMADCO and EHC. These letters are intended to support project development and the completion of necessary technical studies and procedures, prior to considering the authorization of their emissions-reduction outcomes for international use.
