PM: Egypt Seeks More International Support to Offset Refugee Hosting Costs

Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stressed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the need to intensify cooperation with international organizations to secure support for refugees and migrants living in Egypt, citing the heavy burden of services provided by the state.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Madbouly's remarks came during a meeting to review the economic cost of hosting refugees and migrants, attended by senior ministers and officials. He said authorities had worked to assess the financial pressures on the government and held talks with international partners to help ease the strain.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty outlined efforts with United Nations agencies to mobilize support for refugees and migrants, while Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy said Egypt was conducting a detailed census in line with international standards in cooperation with UN bodies.

Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Minister Rania Al-Mashat said other countries' experiences showed the importance of international funding in reducing the economic burden of hosting refugees and migrants.
