Egypt: Egypt has uncovered only about 30% of its archaeological heritage, with vast historic treasures from successive civilizations still buried beneath its soil, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Hisham El-Leithy said on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.According to State Information Service Egypt, El-Leithy spoke to Nile News TV channel, highlighting that archaeological discoveries are being made on a continuous basis, although their public announcement is subject to carefully planned timing. He emphasized that Egypt's archaeological wealth spans Pharaonic, Islamic, Coptic, and Jewish civilizations, with new finds regularly shedding light on the country's rich cultural legacy.He revealed that around 300 foreign archaeological missions and 50 Egyptian missions are currently conducting excavation, research, and conservation work across the country. These missions are crucial to the preservation of Egypt's heritage.El-Leithy also announced that the Aten Museum in Minya is scheduled to open by the end of next year. This museum is expected to be a significant addition to Egypt's cultural and tourism landscape.He further mentioned that the Grand Egyptian Museum's library houses around 17,000 books, including rare scientific volumes transferred from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. This library serves as a major research hub for Egyptologists and scholars from around the world.
