Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Science-Based Coastal Protection in Nile Delta

Damietta:Sewilam highlighted the importance of adopting specialized international expertise and the latest scientific approaches to develop sustainable, nature-based solutions for the Nile Delta coastline. This initiative aims to address the impacts of climate change, particularly in the most vulnerable coastal areas.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam received a report from Mohamed Ghattas, Chairman of the Shore Protection Authority, detailing the status of a feasibility study. The study focuses on using environmentally friendly natural materials to protect these at-risk coastal regions.

The minister emphasized that the Nile Delta protection projects serve as a successful model for practical climate change adaptation. These projects are designed to safeguard citizens and infrastructure, counteract shoreline retreat in erosion-prone areas, and restore beaches lost to erosion.

The report also covered field visits by Shore Protection Authority officials and an international consultancy team to five priority sites west and east of the Rosetta Branch outlet, the Burullus area, east of the Damietta Branch outlet, and the El-Deeba area in Damietta and Port Said. These sites were chosen from nine assessed locations based on several criteria to evaluate technical, natural, and environmental conditions. The goal is to identify the most suitable sustainable protection alternatives for each location.
