Minister of Irrigation Strengthens Ties with UNESCO for Water Research

Cairo:Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam has emphasized the ministry's commitment to enhancing collaboration with UNESCO in scientific research, capacity building, and knowledge exchange. This effort aims to integrate research findings into the development of water policies.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam made these remarks during a meeting with Paul Coustère, Regional Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for the Arab States in Cairo. The meeting focused on enhancing joint cooperation and supporting national priorities related to sustainable water resource management.

The discussions included proposed cooperation to bolster the African Water and Climate Adaptation Center's capacity-building efforts for African professionals. They also addressed collaboration in the field of green water and a comprehensive understanding of the water cycle, including rainfall and soil moisture.

Additionally, the continuation of the UNESCO Chair on the Management and Governance of Transboundary Water Resources at the National Water Research Center was discussed, aiming to establish it as a platform for applied research and expertise exchange. The meeting included a review of ongoing cooperation for Cairo Water Week 2026, particularly sessions on water diplomacy, science-based cooperation, and capacity building.

The two parties also explored a proposed project under the Global Environment Facility, which aims to enhance water security and climate adaptation through the integrated management of coastal groundwater aquifers in Egypt.
