Bangkok:The International Monetary Fund and World Bank have introduced a global plan aimed at tackling online financial fraud, as increasingly sophisticated scams continue to erode trust in digital finance. This initiative, known as the "Bangkok Blueprint," was developed in collaboration with the Bank of Thailand and was unveiled during the institutions' annual meetings in Bangkok.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Bangkok Blueprint outlines 12 policy considerations designed to help countries identify vulnerabilities and develop comprehensive responses. Thai central bank chief Vitai Ratanakorn emphasized the need for a holistic approach, stronger cross-border cooperation, and the sharing of practical experiences to support evolving global standards.
Vitai highlighted that Asia accounted for 67 percent of global fraud losses in 2024, with scam operations particularly prevalent in Southeast Asia, especially in border regions near Thailand. These areas have become transit hubs for human trafficking linked to scam compounds. The initiative also aligns with Thailand's efforts to disrupt scam operations, which have revealed how cyber fraud proceeds contribute to broader illicit financial flows.
