IDSC Releases Infographic on Egypt’s Landmine Clearance Initiatives

Cairo: The Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) published an infographic on Saturday titled ‘From War Remnants to Development Opportunities: Egypt’s Efforts in Combating Landmines,’ which highlights significant national and international efforts to mitigate the risks of landmines and optimize the use of cleared land.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the infographic points out that, on a global scale, more than 41 million stockpiled anti-personnel mines have been destroyed since the Mine Ban Treaty came into effect in 2009. A total of 156 countries have ratified or acceded to the treaty. Despite these efforts, landmines and explosive remnants of war continue to pose a threat to civilians, causing injuries or fatalities every hour. Children are particularly vulnerable, especially with the rise in the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The infographic reveals that Egypt has successfully cleared over 25 million landmines, explosive devices, and wartime remnants from World War II, primarily situated in the Western Desert, which constitutes approximately 22% of the nation’s total land area.

The center also emphasized the support provided for mine victims, including the delivery and maintenance of 100 prosthetic limbs in the Matrouh governorate as of July 2025. Furthermore, a grant valued at 1.52 million Chinese yuan was signed in July 2025 to advance prosthetic systems, reinforcing state efforts to assist those affected.

It was noted that ongoing demining operations have facilitated the execution of several development projects. These include the construction of the Hammam canal, the clearance and development of the El Alamein area, and land preparation for the Nuclear Power Plants Authority at Dabaa. These initiatives have enabled the allocation of land for economic and investment projects, promoting sustainable development.
