Cairo: The 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted, by an overwhelming majority, an annual resolution put forward by Egypt on the application of IAEA safeguards to all nuclear facilities in the Middle East.According to State Information Service Egypt, the resolution received the support of 112 countries, with no country voting against it. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates issued a statement highlighting that the outcome underscores Egypt's standing within international organizations and the consistency of its position with efforts to promote security and stability in the region.Egypt's position advocates for the application of the IAEA safeguards system to all Middle Eastern countries and their nuclear facilities without exception. This includes the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, and the achievement of universality of the Treaty on t he Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).Moreover, Egypt stressed the pivotal role of the NPT in maintaining and strengthening international peace and security since its conclusion in 1968. It underscored the need for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities and fully implement all legal obligations arising from the treaty.The statement also called for enhanced international efforts to overcome the impasse hindering the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. In this context, Egypt noted that the seventh session of the UN Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, scheduled for November 2026 at UN headquarters in New York, offers an opportunity for all regional countries to engage in serious, constructive dialogue and join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).Egypt emphasized that such engagement would support international efforts to achieve the univ ersality of the treaty and establish a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction.
