FM Holds Extensive Talks with Senior German Lawmakers on Gaza, Bilateral Ties

Berlin: Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a series of high-level meetings in the German capital with senior members of the Bundestag, reaffirming the strength of Egyptian-German relations and discussing regional developments, foremost among them the Israeli war on Gaza.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty's engagements on the final day of his visit included meetings with the German-Egyptian Parliamentary Friendship Group. He highlighted the advancing ties between Cairo and Berlin across various sectors, emphasizing Egypt's interest in expanding cooperation, particularly through parliamentary engagement.

The foreign minister underscored Egypt's commitment to parliamentary diplomacy as a vital channel for international cooperation and lauded the friendship group's role in enhancing economic, trade, and investment links. He detailed Egypt's economic reforms and infrastructure development aimed at fostering a competitive investment climate, referencing recent parliamentary exchanges like German MP Alexander Radwan's visit.

In discussions about Gaza, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's support for the Palestinian cause and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, stressing the importance of a ceasefire, implementing UNSC Resolution 2803, and ensuring humanitarian access.

Abdelatty also met Armin Laschet, Chair of the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee, expressing appreciation for their role in strengthening bilateral ties. He outlined Egypt's diplomatic efforts towards regional peace and reiterated support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the stabilization of ceasefires and the importance of maintaining UNRWA's role and funding.

Further talks with the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee highlighted the momentum in bilateral relations and praised Germany's support for Egyptian development projects. Abdelatty expressed hopes for increased German investment, citing structural reforms that have improved Egypt's business climate.

Regional issues like Sudan were discussed, with Abdelatty reaffirming Egypt's commitment to Sudan's sovereignty and stability, and advocating for international cooperation to support humanitarian efforts and political processes there. He also addressed water security concerns, urging cooperation among Nile Basin states and affirming Egypt's stance on protecting its water interests under international law.

The discussions demonstrated the depth of Egyptian-German ties and the exchange of views on key geopolitical challenges. Concluding his visit, Abdelatty met with Julia Kl¶ckner, President of the German Bundestag, highlighting the importance of revitalizing parliamentary cooperation to enhance bilateral relations.
