Cairo: Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad underscored the importance of sea turtles as a key component of marine biodiversity, highlighting their vital role in maintaining ecological balance and the health of seas and oceans.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Awad made the statement in observance of World Sea Turtle Day, held annually on June 16. She emphasized that protecting sea turtles is a crucial part of national efforts to conserve natural resources and achieve sustainable development.

Awad noted that sea turtles are often described as "engineers of marine ecosystems" due to their role in preserving seagrass meadows and coral reefs. These habitats serve as homes for a wide range of marine species and are essential for sustaining fish stocks and maintaining environmental balance.

The minister highlighted several threats faced by sea turtles, including plastic pollution, accidental capture in fishing gear, loss of nesting sites, and the impacts of climate change. She added that most sea turtle species are classified as endangered or vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Awad stated that the Egyptian government prioritizes the protection of sea turtles through an integrated biodiversity conservation framework, especially within marine protected areas in the Red Sea region. These areas provide essential feeding and nesting habitats for several sea turtle species.

She also mentioned that Egyptian environmental legislation prohibits the hunting, trade, or sale of sea turtles and their parts. The government regulates tourism and marine activities to prevent damage to turtle habitats and implements monitoring, conservation, and environmental awareness programs in collaboration with local and international partners.

Awad called on citizens, beachgoers, and those involved in marine-related activities to contribute to sea turtle conservation by reducing the use of single-use plastics, disposing of waste responsibly, and reporting any cases of injury, death, or encroachment on natural habitats.

The minister emphasized that protecting sea turtles is a shared responsibility that requires the combined efforts of government institutions, civil society, the private sector, and the public to safeguard these unique marine creatures and ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems for present and future generations.
