Energy Companies Highlight Egypt’s Role in East Mediterranean Gas Development

Alexandria:Executives from major energy companies, including Italy's Eni, France's TotalEnergies, and the United States' Chevron, emphasized the significance of Egypt's natural gas infrastructure in the development of East Mediterranean gas resources. They highlighted Egypt's strategic location and regional partnerships as essential to reducing development costs and improving supply efficiency to both regional and global markets.

According to State Information Service Egypt, these discussions took place during the Mediterranean Petroleum Conference and Exhibition held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The event, themed 'Egypt A Key Pillar of Energy Security in the Mediterranean Region,' included participation from Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, Cypriot counterpart Michael Damianos, Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia, the Greek Ambassador to Egypt Nikolaos Papageorgiou, and senior industry officials.

Speakers at the conference discussed Egypt's expanding role in regional gas transportation projects, notably those linking Cypriot fields to Egyptian infrastructure. They noted that existing processing and liquefaction facilities in Egypt could bolster export capabilities, thereby enhancing energy security and providing competitive market routes.

Diego Portoghese of Eni highlighted that utilizing Egypt's infrastructure would accelerate the development of East Mediterranean gas resources. Eni plans to begin production from Cyprus' Cronos gas field by 2028, utilizing Egyptian facilities to create a cross-border value chain between Cyprus and Egypt. This approach is expected to lower costs and expedite gas commercialization.

TotalEnergies' Julien Pouget underscored Egypt's growing importance as an energy conduit amidst global geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions. He acknowledged the Cronos project as a key milestone for both Egypt and Cyprus, praising Egypt's extensive energy infrastructure.

Chevron's Javier La Rosa noted the company's ongoing investment in the Mediterranean, emphasizing the East Mediterranean's significance in Chevron's growth strategy. He outlined key growth factors, including geological potential and effective partnerships, and praised the cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus in advancing gas field development.

Greek Ambassador Nikolaos Papageorgiou pointed to trilateral cooperation between Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece as a model for regional energy integration. He noted the complementary strengths of each country in supporting the gas supply chain to European markets.

The conference underscored the need for enhanced collaboration between governments and energy companies to integrate regional infrastructure and accelerate the development of gas resources, thereby strengthening energy security and maximizing economic returns.
