Cairo: Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat on Thursday, September 17, 2026, engaged in discussions with Finnish ambassador to Cairo Riikka Eela and representatives from the Finnish company W¤rtsil¤ regarding potential collaboration, partnership, and investment in renewable energy and smart electricity grids. The focus of the talks was to bolster the stability of Egypt's unified power grid and to reduce carbon emissions.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting centered on leveraging modern technologies to enhance the electricity system and increase its capacity to integrate renewable energy sources. The Minister highlighted the expertise of the Finnish company in supporting the green transition through the design and construction of flexible power generation plants that utilize fast-response turbines, alongside battery energy storage systems, to improve the adaptability of the power grid as solar and wind energy reliance grows.

Esmat noted that discussions also covered future cooperation in sharing knowledge on High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) electricity interconnection projects, implementing artificial intelligence solutions for grid management and load forecasting, promoting the localization of electrical equipment manufacturing, and organizing joint training workshops.

He emphasized the ongoing efforts to maximize renewable energy's contribution to Egypt's energy mix and the importance of technology in enhancing efficiency. The Minister also commended the productive collaboration between Egypt and Finland in fostering partnerships with the private sector to transition from traditional to smart power grids, marking significant progress in electricity transmission and distribution.
