Egypt’s Resolution on Middle East Nuclear Safeguards Gains Wide Approval

Vienna: The 69th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference has overwhelmingly adopted Egypt’s draft resolution on applying the IAEA safeguards in the Middle East, with 120 member states voting in favor. The strong support reflects broad international consensus on the importance of Egypt’s initiative and its objectives.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the resolution calls for placing all nuclear facilities in the Middle East under the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards regime without exception. It also urges all countries in the region to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and supports the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

This development comes as part of Egypt’s efforts to advance nuclear disarmament and prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, particularly in the Middle East. It also reflects Egypt’s commitment to promoting the universality of the NPT and ensuring the full implementation of its legal obligations.

The adoption of the resolution reinforces the international community’s responsibility to uphold and implement the treaty’s provisions and support regional and global non-proliferation efforts.
