Cairo: Egypt's National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have agreed to expand their cooperation on food safety and public health. This development came during discussions held in Cairo on Monday, as announced by the NFSA in a statement dated July 21, 2025.

According to State Information Service Egypt, NFSA Chairman Tarek El-Houby met with WHO's Representative to Egypt, Nima Saeed Abid, to explore ways to bolster national food safety programs, enhance inspection systems, and improve technical training and capacity building. El-Houby emphasized Egypt's dedication to aligning its food safety policies with international standards and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those concerning health and food quality. He highlighted the importance of ongoing coordination with the WHO to enhance the country's food safety ecosystem.

The discussions also covered national efforts to reduce trans fats and added sugars in food products, in accordance with WHO health recommendations aimed at reducing non-communicable diseases. Abid commended the NFSA's role in modernizing Egypt's food sector and reaffirmed WHO's commitment to providing technical support and enhancing collaboration in the future.
