Egyptian Prime Minister Prioritizes Social Protection Amid Global Economic Challenges

Cairo:Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has stated that securing new financial resources for social protection programs remains the Egyptian government's top priority over the next three years, despite unprecedented global economic challenges.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Madbouly, speaking at the "Egypt 2026 Forum" during a session on market regulation and effective social safety nets, elaborated that structural economic reforms are intended to address long-standing issues while protecting vulnerable social groups from adverse financial impacts.

Madbouly highlighted key initiatives, including the "Takaful and Karama" program, which has helped 8.2 million families since its inception. The initiative operates on a three-year rotational model aimed at transitioning households into sustainable employment and currently supports 4.7 million families, adapting to economic shifts as needed.

The Prime Minister also addressed the commodity cash-support system, emphasizing that the government is not reducing funding or beneficiaries, who currently make up nearly 60% of Egyptian households. Instead, the system provides flexible cash allocations for essential goods, tailored to individual family needs and accounting for inflation.

Budget allocations for food and bread subsidies have increased significantly from EGP 32.8 billion in 2013-2014 to EGP 178 billion this year. Additionally, the government has increased healthcare and education budgets by 30% and 20% year-over-year, respectively, as it seeks to expand fiscal space to accelerate the nationwide rollout of comprehensive health insurance.
