Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed their deep appreciation for the historic friendship between Cairo and Moscow and its ongoing development in various domains. This development came during phone talks between the two top diplomats, as part of ongoing consultations on bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern.
According to State Information Service Egypt, during the talks, Abdelatty and Lavrov reviewed the path of Egyptian-Russian relations. Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, including following up on joint strategic projects and the economic aspects of the relationship.
The discussion also addressed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip. Abdelatty outlined Egypt's ongoing efforts to uphold the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Agreement, stressing the importance of implementing all provisions of the plan that pave the way for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The Egyptian foreign minister briefed Lavrov on preparations for the upcoming Cairo international conference on the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. Both sides reviewed ongoing consultations regarding a draft UN Security Council resolution on developments in Gaza and security arrangements, in light of current deliberations within the UNSC.
Abdelatty emphasized the importance of ensuring that the resolution contributes to consolidating the ceasefire and creating conditions for achieving a just and comprehensive peace that meets the aspirations of the Palestinian people and guarantees their right to self-determination and statehood.
Regarding the situation in Sudan, Abdelatty called for an immediate ceasefire as a prelude to launching a sustainable political process that preserves the unity of the Sudanese state and its institutions.
The talks also covered developments concerning the Iranian nuclear file. Abdelatty and Lavrov exchanged views on ways to reduce tensions in the region and support diplomatic solutions. Abdelatty underscored the importance of continued cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as building mutual trust among all parties concerned, to provide a genuine opportunity for reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue.
